I teach piano and music production

I’m Guy Blaze Clearwater, and music is my life.

My mission is to teach students the basics and beyond of piano playing so that they can express themselves musically and have fun doing so! I love teaching piano because it allows me to share my joy of music with others in hopes that they too can enjoy playing music. I am so thankful and fortunate to have learned to play music from such an early age, and it feels good to be able to give back with a skill that can have such a positive impact on my student’s lives.

Yesterday our son sat down to practice and my husband & I literally almost fell out of our seats! After only three lessons, he’s actually playing and it sounds GREAT. We love the enthusiasm that he’s showing. Thank you so much!

PIANO LESSONS

I make piano fun - my students play with both hands from their first lessons.

In the beginning, we’ll focus on some easy steps to get you playing great sounding music and even composing and improvising right away. As you progress, I’ll teach you how to play great-sounding popular, blues, classical, and jazz pieces as well as your favorite songs from the radio or musicals!

MUSIC PRODUCTION LESSONS

Once you’re familiar with playing the piano, we can introduce electronic music production - i.e. using a computer to make the sort of songs you hear on the radio - with many instruments, all playing different parts.

I use Ableton, GarabageBand, and Logic Pro - industry standards of music production software.

Our lessons will center around composing and arranging your own songs, with a focus on the different tools and techniques used in multi-track recording.

My proudest moment teaching electronic music production was when my student, 12 years old at the time, had music he wrote performed at Carnegie Hall.

I began my musical journey when I was 6 years old when I began taking violin lessons from my mother, a professional violinist and teacher. I started playing piano at age 7 and progressed quickly, discovering that I had a natural ear for music. My passion for piano grew alongside my discovery of having perfect pitch which led me to spend hours developing the ability to play by ear. At age 9, I taught myself drums and bass, but always felt the most deeply connected to piano. My father, also a musician, taught me the basics of multi-track recording and I soon began writing and recording original songs. At age 16, I started teaching piano. Today, I am a professional pianist, music producer, and DJ, and I teach both piano and music production.

 Testimonials

“Guy is proficient with elements of theory and also adds his own flavor to lessons with improvisation and composition. My boys have progressed more with Guy than any other teacher I have tried.”

  • Larry Langs, professional musician

“I like learning piano from Guy because he teaches us songs that we want to learn.”

  • Everley, 8

“I took piano lessons as a child and felt defeated. In a short time working with Guy I feel confident in my ability to retain what I have learned. It is fun to work with him and the knowledge is presented in a way that I understand.”

  • Ricky, adult student

“There are many piano teachers, but not many who reach the status of musical life coach.  Guy spoke my son’s creative language in a way that we, his family, and many other regular piano teachers could not.

  • Tracy, parent

It’s so amazing to see my son make progress so quickly. Thank you!”

  • Sofiya, parent

“Before I started learning with Guy, I almost never wanted to practice, but now that guy is teaching me piano he has made practicing fun. He has my sister and me make up our own songs and now we have even been able to make up a duet.

  • Kate, 10

“Guy is fun, nice, and teaches me new things every lesson. He is good at playing by ear, coming up with tunes, and improvising. He helps improve both piano skills and creativity skills.

  • Matty, 13

“Guy’s patience is remarkable! When I don’t understand what I’m supposed to do, he explains it in ways that make it so easy to grasp and then play!”

  • Don, adult student

“Guy is very encouraging and makes piano easy and fun!

  • Katelyn, student

“There are so many things we love about our teacher Guy Clearwater. After several years of traditional piano lessons my two daughters (8 & 11 at the time) were not thriving in their joy or understanding of music. Practicing was laborious, if at all. When we found Guy everything changed! They were both playing real songs and music became alive in our home!

Guy makes lesson time fun for the kids with his kind, gracious way with them. When they struggle with a new concept or chord, he is able to HEAR their mistake with his incredibly musical ability and then give them a tangible, creative way to fix it! It is unbelievable to watch. He makes them feel like musicians and composers as they make up and name their own songs each week! He gets excited for them when they improve and encourages us each week in areas we can improve more.

We actually have our lessons via FaceTime, which would seem to present a natural disconnect for something as hands-on and interactive as piano but the way they are able to jump right into lessons, his keen ear, and his energy makes it as though we were in the same room. We highly recommend to anyone interested in piano, at any level and any age, to seek the opportunity to learn from Guy Clearwater!”
